You’ve used flashcards before, haven’t you? In Shosaiki (Notes from the Study, an essay collection), Sugawara no Michizane says, “To learn, one takes notes; one takes notes to write another book.” In other words, finding the necessary information and rewriting it is the very basis of learning and creativity. That’s exactly what we do with flashcards or data today, so it looks like things haven’t changed much since Sugawara’s time.
